Certified Financial Planner®/CFP® Certification

FP CanadaTM (previously Financial Planning Standards Council) recently announced changes to the educational requirements to earn the CFP® designation or the new Qualified Associate Financial PlannerTM certification that becomes effective on January 1, 2020.  Specific details are available on the FP Canada website at

CSI is currently updating its educational path to the CFP designation and will also be introducing a path to the new QAFPTM certification. These new education paths (subject to FP Canada final approval) will include the current CSI courses leading to the CFP designation and additional top up courses to address the curriculum changes.  The courses offered through CSI will meet the educational requirements and allow entry into the FP Canada path to the QAFP certification and CFP certification, which now also includes courses offered only through FP Canada.

PRESENT EDUCATIONAL PATHS TO FPSC Level 1® and CFP CERTIFICATIONS (For June and November 2019 Exam Sessions)

CSI provides you with three routes towards achieving the CFP designation. Each of these routes meets the educational requirements on the path to CFP Certification and is tailored to the intricacies of the industry (banking, mutual fund dealer or investment dealer) it is designed for. It is recommended that students opt for the route of the industry they work in or aspire to, as that route is best structured and nuanced for that particular field. “Click on a course in one of the paths to learn more and enrol.”

Stream 1: CFP® Certification Route for Bankers

Successful completion of the Canadian Securities Course (CSC®) or Investment Funds in Canada (IFC), Financial Planning I (FP I) and Financial Planning II (FP II) prepares and qualifies you to write the FP Canada Level 1®  Examination in Financial Planning, the first examination on your route to CFP Certification.

Stream 2: CFP® Certification Route for Mutual Fund Representatives (MFDA)

Successful completion of the Canadian Securities Course (CSC®), the Wealth Management Essentials (WME) and the WME-Financial Planning Supplement or Financial Planning Supplement prepares and qualifies you to write the FP Canada Level 1® Examination in Financial Planning, the first examination on your route to CFP Certification.

Please note:

Candidates must attempt the FP Canada Level 1 Examination in Financial Planning within four years of completing their last CSI course en route to CFP certification, without exception. FP Canada conducts this examination twice a year; in June and November. Please check the FP Canada website for exact dates and plan your studies / course work accordingly.

Candidates must also complete an FP Canada–approved Capstone Course before writing the CFP Examination.

In accordance with the announced FP Canada changes, the last registrations for the CSI Capstone for CFP Certification Course will be June 14, 2019. This will provide candidates with enough time to complete the capstone course prior to registration for the November 2019 exams.

Effective January 1, 2020, the Capstone Course will no longer be accepted for candidates wishing to write the CFP examination for the first time. After January 1, 2020, candidates writing the CFP exam for the first time must successfully complete FP Canada-Approved Core and Advanced Curriculum Programs and FP Canada's Introduction to Professional Ethics course and CFP Professional Education Program prior to writing the CFP exam.

To write the FP Canada Level 1® Examination in Financial Planning or CFP® Examination, you must register directly with FP Canada.
