COMPETENCY PROFILE

The PFP® Competency Profile provides an overview of the responsibilities, skills and knowledge that are unique to someone who holds the PFP® designation.

The PFP® Professional Competency Profile is the foundational document for the Personal Financial Planner (PFP®) designation that describes the required competencies (i.e., the knowledge, skills and abilities) of professionals awarded the designation. The Competency Profile is the defining resource for what a financial planner can and should do in practice. As such, it is used to set the requirements for the pre-requisite education programs, the work experience component, the Applied Financial Planning Certification Examination and for continuing education requirements.

As the PFP® designation continues to progress in order to meet the changing needs of clients, employers and most recently regulators, we revised the Competency Profile, in June 2017, after an extensive consultative process involving a range of stakeholders. The Competency Profile drives the education programs, the credentialing exam, experiential and CE requirements.

2021 PFP® Competency Profile Update

Every five years, CSI reaches out to PFP® designation holders to re-validate the PFP® Professional Competency Profile. As the last profile validation took place in 2016, 2021 is the year of re-validation. In the third week of March 2021, all PFP® designation holders in good standing will receive a request to complete a survey designed to assess the relevance of the competencies and knowledge areas included within the current PFP® Competency Profile.

We are asking all PFP® holders to take the time to contribute to your profession and complete the survey. As representatives of all PFP® holders and those aspiring to become financial planners, your opinion is critical to the growth of the profession. The survey results will be used to update the PFP® Professional Competency Profile to ensure that it provides an accurate representation of competent performance of financial planners.
