Exam Delivery Formats

What are the exam delivery formats?

CSI has made significant upgrades to how we conduct and deliver exams. We have been working with our partner, Prometric, to modernize our exam delivery formats and provide students with greater flexibility, safety and a better overall exam-taking experience.

We now offer Remotely Proctored exams and have expanded our existing Computer-Based Testing (CBT) capacity at exam centres.

Students can book exams in-person CBT exams in 14 major Canadian cities (St. John's (NL), Halifax, Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa, Toronto, Hamilton, London, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver) and internationally.

What is remote proctoring?

Remote proctoring is an online exam delivery format that allows students in remote locations or areas still under COVID-19-related restrictions to safely write their proctored exams. Students can take their exams from the comfort of their home or office without travelling to an exam centre. Here are some more benefits of remote proctoring:

  • Increases the flexibility and accessibility to book and write exams
  • Provides immediate pass-fail grade with official results within 3 business days
  • Improved interface and tools to manage time during the exam (time remaining, flag questions, highlight words)
  • Provides secure and encrypted testing
What is computer-based testing at an exam centre?

Computer based testing at an exam centre is in-person computer-based testing at a dedicated exam centre which provides a comfortable and quiet environment to write your exam. All our exam centres follow strict social distancing guidelines for the safety of our students and staff. Here are some more benefits of computer-based testing at an exam centre:

  • Increases the availability of exam sessions
  • Provides immediate pass-fail grade with officials results within 24 hours
  • Improved interface and tools to manage time during the exam (time remaining, flag questions, highlight words)
  • provides secure and encrypted testing

How to book your exam

To book your exam:

  • Log into your student profile using your student id and password.
  • Select "book exam" for the course exam you wish to write.
  • Click 'ok' in the box to indicate that you have checked for any course updates before proceeding.
  • Follow the screen choices to select either an in-person or remotely proctored exam.
  • Select a location and time.
  • If you are writing a second or third attempt, your final step will be to make payment.

Once booked, you will receive an exam confirmation email that will include important information. Please take the time to read this carefully. The same confirmation email can be found under "my messages" when you log into your student profile. If you do not receive an email confirmation within 20 minutes of booking your exam, please check to ensure your booking was successful.

Important: Before booking a remote proctored exam, you must ensure that you have access to appropriate computer hardware and internet specifications.

  • Complete the proproctor system check to confirm your system's compatibility. We strongly recommend that you use a home computer/laptop instead of your employer's computer as most firms have firewalls that will prevent the downloading of the exam even if the system check is successfully completed.
How to reschedule or cancel your exam?

Rescheduling

To reschedule your exam, you must first cancel your current booking (if a rewrite fee was paid it will be refunded to you). You must cancel this exam with more than 9 calendar days to avoid late cancelation fees. If your exam is a rewrite you will be prompt for this payment at the time of rescheduling your exam.

Late Cancelations

If you provide 9 or more calendar days to cancel your exam you will not incur the late cancelation fee. If you provide less than 9 but more than 3 calendar days, you will be subject to the late cancelation fees.

No Shows

If you provide 3 or less calendar days to cancel your exam or if you do not appear for your exam you will be charged a no show fee.

Accommodation for special needs

If you have a documented disability or medical condition which impedes your ability to write an exam, special arrangements can be made for you. We attempt to balance your special needs with our responsibility to measure your proficiency in course content when we determine the appropriate accommodation for you. Please make your request as soon as possible after you enrol to give us enough time to arrange your accommodation. You will need to have official documentation from a licensed medical professional supporting proof of your disability or medical condition. This should be submitted at the time of enrolment in the course.

Identification

To confirm your identity, a CSI exam candidate must have a valid, signed, government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license or passport. (a photo or electronic copy of your valid id is not acceptable). Please check the expiry date on your id to ensure it is valid.

If you do not have valid ID, you will not be permitted to write your exam. You will have to contact CSI to make alternate arrangements for your exam. A late cancellation fee will apply.

Read more about CSI's exam day policies and faqs.

Protocol

We offer in-person testing at CSI offices in Toronto and Montreal and at Prometric test centers. In these centers, students are subject to the exam day protocol, this includes check-in procedures to protect the integrity of CSI exams. We recommend you watch Prometric's videos to learn more about the exam day experience for in-person exams at a test centre and remotely proctored exams.

Reading your student performance record

Students will be provided with a student performance record for all proctored exams. This performance record will indicate how you performed for the each of the topic domains. You can find your student performance record can be found on MyCSI.

How to read your student performance record:

You will need to refer to the course details to determine the number of questions on the exam as well as the percentage of questions that apply to each domain. The weighting of the exam for each domain is an estimate and can be plus or minus 5% of the published exam weighting.

For example, if your exam has 100 questions and approximately 10% of the exam is based on ethics, this means that approximately 10 questions will be asked on this topic. When you receive your student performance record, it will indicate how well you performed on this topic. If your performance record indicates that you only received 30% on this topic, it means that you correctly answered approximately 3 out of 10 questions.

Your overall exam mark is not based on an average of the percentage marks received for each domain. To determine how your overall mark was calculated, you will need to identify the number of correct answers you received for each domain.

Remarking of exams

Multiple-choice exams

All multiple choice exams are scored by the computer. There are protocols in place to identify any technical glitches or errors that may occur and therefore csi is confident that the posted mark is correct. However if you would still like to request an exam re-marked fees will apply. You will need to fill this form.

Written exams

Examinations submitted for re-marking will be marked using the same criteria used during the original marking. Examinations undergo a thorough process where one marker (in some cases, two markers) independently marks each examination; as a result, each examination result has been carefully determined and therefore a re-mark is unlikely to produce a different mark. However, if you still like to request an exam re-marked, fees will apply. You will need to fill this form.

Can I review my exam with a CSI staff member?

For most exams, candidates receive a Student Performance Record which gives exam writers feedback on their performance on an exam.

Candidates may not review exams after they have submitted their final responses during the exam.

CSI will not review exams or discuss solutions to individual exam questions at any point in the study or examination process.

Cheating during an exam

Cheating or attempting to cheat during an exam is serious breach of the student code of conduct.

Cheating on an exam includes copying or allowing another student to copy exam answers, receiving help or helping another student during an exam, impersonating another student, or use or possession of any materials (including electronic devices) other than those permitted.

If you are caught cheating during an exam, a report will be filed and reviewed by CSI's students ethics committee. The committee can impose penalties ranging from giving a grade of zero to a suspension and advising of employers and regulators.
