Computer-Based Exam Rules and Regulations

Valid photo ID must be presented to the invigilator to gain access to the exam room.

No food or beverages will be allowed in the exam room.

You should bring a pen/pencil for rough calculations. Scrap paper will be provided but must be returned to the invigilator at the end of the exam.

You should bring a calculator and make sure it is non-programmable and non-printing. Please note that the calculator function on the computer will not be enabled.

The system will generate a result for you at the end of your exam. This result is unofficial and does not include your actual score. Official scores will be available within 2 weeks of completing your exam. At the end of your exams, you will receive one of the following messages:

  • Pass - Congratulations! You have passed the exam. Your official confirmation will be available within 1 business day.
  • Fail - Unfortunately you were unsuccessful and will need to rewrite the exam. Your official notification will be available within 1 business day. Included in the notification you receive by mail will be feedback on this exam attempt. The feedback will help you focus your studying efforts for your next exam attempt.

As with paper-based exams, you will be required to complete a non-disclosure agreement before you begin your computer-based exam. This agreement will require you to confirm that you understand the policies relating to uncontrollable exam interruptions (see FAQs below for details).

All other exam policies are the same as those for paper-based exams. Please click to view CSI’s exam booking policies.

Computer-Based Exams: Frequently Asked Questions

1. Will there be a lesson on how to use the computer-based exam at the beginning of the exam?

No. It is strongly recommended you familiarize yourself with the computer-based exam interface with our online demo prior to arriving to the exam centre. You will not have an opportunity to do so once you enter the exam centre.

2. Will I be given scrap paper at the exam sitting?

Yes, scrap paper will be provided. All scrap paper must be returned to the invigilator at the end of the exam sitting. No one will be allowed to leave until scrap paper has been turned in.

3. Do I have to use an external mouse?

If you are more comfortable with the laptop mouse please notify the invigilator when you appear for your exam so that they can remove the external mouse.

4. Can I use a calculator?

Yes, you can use a calculator for the exam provided that it is non-programmable and non-printing. This is the same policy that applies to paper-based exams. Please note that the calculator function on the computer will not be enabled.

5. Do the questions appear all in one page and are viewed by scrolling, or do they appear on the screen one at a time?

Questions appear as they do in the online demo. online demo

6. Are the questions all of the same type?

All the questions are in multiple-choice format. However, some questions are stand-alone while others relate to a case scenario. In case scenario questions you will be requested to answer more than one question based on the information presented in the scenario.

7. What happens if I forget the information given in the case scenario?

The case scenario information will be repeated for each question of a case, so it will always be there for you to see.

8. How do I use the "flag" feature?

If you are unsure about the answer to a question, you can flag it so that you can easily return to it later. The flagged questions may be viewed later through the status map for the exam.

9. If I change my mind can I go back and change my answer?

You can change the answer you select at any time and as many times as you want. However, once you have attempted to answer a question you cannot leave it blank.

10. How do I time my exam?

There is a timer in the exam that will indicate the amount of time remaining. The timer starts with the first question of your exam.

11. If I decide to stop writing my computer-based exam and do not submit it, will I be allowed to switch to a paper-based exam?

Once you begin to write the computer-based exam, your decision is final. You will not be allowed to switch to a paper-based exam after you have started your computer-based exam.

12. If my unofficial mark is a fail when can I book to rewrite the exam? Do I need to wait for my official results or can I rewrite right away?

You need to wait for your official results to be posted before you can register for another exam. The normal exam booking policy applies. CSI requires 14 days notice to book any exam. If you are not absolutely sure that you will be available to write on that day please give yourself extra time. Exam bookings cancelled with less than 14 days notice are non-refundable.

13. How long will it take to get my official results?

Your official results will be available within 1 business day, including a detailed feedback form.

14. Where can I write the computer-based exam?

The computer-based exams are offered at CSI's Toronto exam room, located at 200 Wellington Street West, 15th Floor; these exams run on computer laptops, and each laptop is equipped with an external (plug-in) mouse for ease of operation.

15. I have special needs. Can I still attempt the computer-based exam?

CSI makes every attempt to accommodate students with special needs. Each case is analysed on an individual basis.

16. What happens if there is an interruption during my exam sitting as a result of a power failure or computer malfunction?

CSI staff will make every effort to solve the problem as quickly as possible. The invigilator will keep track of missing time and it will be added to the end of your exam. If the exam cannot be resumed within 30 minutes, the sitting will be cancelled. All students will need to rebook for a future exam sitting. There will be no charge and CSI will try to accommodate requests as quickly as possible.

17. If the exam is interrupted temporarily, will I have to start at the beginning again?

The computer-based exam interface allows you to save your answers as soon as they are entered. It is strongly recommended that you hit save after answering each question so that all entries made prior to the interruption will be recorded. When you resume your exam, you will be able to continue from the point at which you left off. Familiarize yourself with the computer-based exam testing interface by reviewing the online demo prior to attending your exam.

During the interruption to the exam, you must remain seated quietly at your workstation. No talking or studying will be allowed.

18. What happens if the interruption lasts for more than 30 minutes or it is clear that no immediate reconnection is possible?

In this case, the exam sitting will be cancelled. All students will need to book another time to write the exam. There will be no charge for rebooking and CSI will try to accommodate requests as quickly as possible.

19. If I have to rebook my exam sitting as a result of an interruption, will I be given the same exam?

No, you will not be given the same exam. When you rebook your exam, you will be given another version of the exam to write.

20. What happens if the exam is disrupted by a fire alarm or other problem requiring a halt to the exam?

If it is not necessary to evacuate the room but the exam must be halted temporarily (less than 30 minutes), the invigilator will keep track of the time missed and add this time on to the end of the exam. You will not be penalized for any disruption to your exam. Should you feel that the disruption is too severe, after a minimum of 10 minutes has elapsed, you will be given the option of rebooking your exam sitting at no charge. This decision must be made and communicated to the invigilator before the sitting resumes.

During the interruption to the exam, you must remain seated quietly at your workstation. No talking or studying will be allowed.

If it is necessary for the exam room to be evacuated, the sitting will be cancelled and all students will have to rebook their exams. This policy applies to all exam sittings, both computer- and paper-based. There will be no charge for the rebooking and CSI will make every effort to accommodate all requests as quickly as possible.

21. What happens if I am late for the exam sitting?

Students are required to arrive for exams 15 minutes prior to the official start time. This will give time to ensure that everyone gets logged on to the system prior to the start time. Students arriving after the beginning of the exam will be required to rebook and pay the regular exam booking fee.

22. When will computer-based exams be available for other courses?

Availability of computer-base exams for other courses is currently being assessed.
