Course Completion Requirements

What do I need to do to complete the course?

Most CSI courses require a grade of 60% to pass, a few exceptions do apply. Please refer to your course page for more information.

Will I be notified about course content changes and updates?

CSI courses are regularly updated, even while you are enrolled in the course. Generally these changes do not affect the exam questions. If new content affects the exam, dates will be posted as to when the changes come into effect in your online course. If you do not wish to be tested on the new content, you must write your exam(s) before the posted date.

How long will I have access to my online course?

Access to your online materials will close 2 weeks after successful course completion or course expiry (whichever comes first). CSI recommends that you save a copy of your online materials prior to course completion.

Note: Online access to your course cannot be re-activated after your course has been moved to completion/expiry whichever comes first.

How many times can I attempt to write the exam?

For most CSI courses, you may attempt an exam a maximum of three times during your course enrolment period, including any extensions you may have purchased. A few exceptions do exist; please visit your course detail page for more information.

If you have completed a course in the past and would like to take the course again, you can re-enrol in the course at any time.

However, if you’re enrolled in one of these courses and have attempted and failed an exam three times during your course enrolment, your enrolment will be terminated and you will need to re-enrol in the same course. You are eligible to re-enrol in the course six months from your last exam attempt.

You are eligible to enrol in any other CSI course for which you qualify while you are waiting for this period to expire.

When does my course expire?

Please log on to My CSI to check your course expiry date. Your course enrollment period could vary based on the course you are registered in. Once you are enrolled in a course, you can verify your enrollment and expiry dates by logging in to your student profile. All courses with a proctored exam will have a maximum 1 year enrolment period. Access to your online materials will close 2 weeks after successful course completion or course expiry (whichever comes first). Many courses (such as Continuing Education courses) only have a non-proctored online exam and a 6-month enrolment period.

Course Extensions

Are course extensions possible?

If you have not completed your course during the regular enrolment period, you’re allowed to purchase a one-time extension per course enrolment. You must apply for an extension prior to the expiry of your enrolment period.

  • One year course extensions are offered for each course purchased in a bundle (if you selected the Enrol by Program Option).
  • Your course extension is reflective of your course enrolment period. If you are enrolled in a 1 year course, you qualify for a 1 year course extension. If you are enrolled in a 6 month course, you qualify for a 6 month extension.
  • If you successfully complete your course in your extension period, access to your online materials will close 2 weeks after successful course completion or course expiry (whichever comes first).

Please note: Not all courses are extendable; please check the course page for more information. Most CE courses, study tools and certification exams are not extendable.

What do course extension fees cover?

Extension fees cover:

  • Access to the online version of the course, if applicable
  • An additional 12 months to complete your one year enrolment course
  • An additional 6 months to complete your six month enrolment course

Extension fees DO NOT cover:

  • New textbooks
  • Learning aids that were purchased separately from your course, such as Check Products
  • Exam re-write fees
  • Exam cancelations. Purchasing a course extension does not automatically cancel any exams you may have already scheduled for this course. If you do not wish to write your exam you must still abide by the exam cancellation policies and provide sufficient notice.

Are course extension fees refundable?

Course extension fees are non-refundable.

Are extensions available on check products?

If you purchase a course extension and wish to extend access to your check product simply click on the Extend Check button on your MyCSI page to proceed. A fee will apply.

What do check extension fees cover?

Check extension fees cover:

  • An additional 12 months to use the check product.
  • Access to any update made to the check product.

How do I qualify for an extension?

To qualify for an extension, you must be enrolled in your original course. Courses designated as Continuing Education courses do not qualify for extensions.

Your extension will give you an additional 12 months to complete your one year enrolment course and an additional 6 months to complete your six month enrolment course.

Your exam assessment record from the original enrolment period will be carried over to the extension period.

You will be able to access any unused exam attempts from your previous enrolment during the extension period, subject to current exam rules. Un-attempted exams in the original enrolment are permitted, without fee, during the extension. Each exam re-write, after the first attempt, is subject to exam re-write fees.

Can I get an extension if an error was made?

You may request an exception if CSI made an error that prevented you from using your original enrolment period or applying for an extension of that period. Examples of such errors may include not receiving material on time, lack of access to online products or non-processing of extension applications.

You can apply for a CSI service error exception by email. You will need to explain the error, the impact on you, and what efforts have taken place to date. CSI will review details of the problem and the actions taken to date before granting your request. If your request is granted, the length of the extension will be based on how this service error affected your studies.

Can I get an extension under extenuating circumstances?

Requests to purchase an extension more than one month past the expiry date of your course must be approved by CSI.

Eligibility and Enrollment

Are pre-requisites required?

Most CSI courses require no pre-requisites. However, there are a few exceptions – for more details on your specific course, please visit the course page for relevant information.

Some CSI products such as Check products and Webinars have co-requisites. You must be currently enrolled in a course to purchase the study tools for that course. For example, to enrol in the CSC Check, you have to be enrolled in the CSC course. Study tools can be purchased at the same time as you enrol in the course or anytime during enrolment.

Are there experience requirements?

CSI designations and fellowship require candidates to have relevant work experience either prior to being awarded the designation or fellowship. During the designation application process, all candidates must provide a contact who will be required to verify work experience before the granting of the designation.

How to enrol?

Enrolment in CSI courses is open to registrants worldwide and is accepted at any time throughout the year. Students may begin their studies immediately upon enrolling. Students may enrol online at www.csi.ca or by completing a CSI Enrolment form.

When enrolling, please ensure you use your legal name as shown on your government-issued photo identification. If you need to make changes after enrolment please visit the FAQ “What if my name changes” or contact support.csi.ca for more information.

Student ID number

If you’ve forgotten your Student ID and password and haven’t registered an email address with CSI, contact us through support.csi.ca indicating that you lost your Student ID and password and indicate your full name (including middle initials), former name (if applicable) and at least three of the following:

  • Month and year of birth
  • A list of CSI courses that you’ve completed along with the approximate dates of completion
  • Employer (at the time of your last CSI enrolment)
  • Mailing address (at the time of your last CSI enrolment)
  • Phone number (at the time of your last CSI enrolment)
  • E-mail address at work or/and home (at the time of your last CSI enrolment)

We will use this information to confirm your identity and will send you your Student ID and password by email within 24 hours.

Payment process

  • Payments accepted: Credit Card (VISA, MasterCard or American Express)
  • Organizations paying on behalf of employees can use their corporate account number and be invoiced
  • Payment must be made at the time of course registration or purchase of any CSI product or service
  • Registrations or purchases will not be processed without payment
  • All fees are taxable

Are shipping and handling charges added to course fees?

Shipping and handling charges will be added if you order textbooks or any other products that are shipped by courier. Shipping and handling charges vary according to the area where the items are being shipped.

What's the enrolment period?

Your course enrolment period could vary based on the course you are registered in. Once you are enrolled in a course, you can verify your enrolment and expiry dates by logging in to your student profile. Expiry dates always fall on the last day of the month in which your course expires in Eastern Standard Time.

Please note: All courses with a proctored exam have a 1 year enrolment period.

Courses without proctored exams (such as Continuing Education courses) are either 6 months or 1-year enrolments. Check the information on the course page for details.

Eligibility to re-enrol?

If you have completed a course in the past and would like to take the course again, you can re-enrol in the course at any time. However, if you’re enrolled in one of these courses and have reached the maximum number of exam attempts during your course enrolment, your enrolment will be terminated and you will need to re-enrol in the same course. You are eligible to re-enrol in the course six months from your last exam attempt.

You are eligible to enrol in any other CSI course for which you qualify while you are waiting for this period to expire.

Please note for AFP:

For successful completion of the AFP certification examination, both AFP 1 and AFP 2 must be completed. The initial enrolment period set for completion of both examinations is 1 year. After 2 unsuccessful attempts of either Exam 1 or 2, you are required to wait six months before re-enrolling in the AFP.

If you have attempted Exam 1 and/or Exam 2 at least once and were unsuccessful on one or both and wish to withdraw from this course you can do so, please note no refund will be granted. You are required to wait six months before re-enrolling in the AFP from your last exam attempt.

Candidates who complete only one of the two required examinations from a previous enrolment can transfer the mark from the successful exam attempt to the new enrolment. The remaining examination must be completed within 2 years of the date of the successful completion of the other exam. This mark transfer will be allowed once only.

If I have enrolled in a course and do not want to complete it, can another person take my place?

Another person cannot take your place in the course. If you do not want to complete it, you can request a refund online or send a Course Cancellation Form to CSI within two weeks of your enrolment date.

Can I transfer my course enrolment to another person?

You cannot transfer your course enrolment to another person. If you do not want to complete your course, you can request a refund by sending a written request to CSI within two weeks of your enrolment date or process your request online.

Can I transfer from one course to another course?

You cannot transfer from one course to another course. If you do not want to complete your course, you can request a refund by sending a written request to CSI within two weeks of your enrolment date or process your request online.

Exception Decision Process

What is the purpose of the process?

Students seeking an exception to a CSI rule or policy due to specific circumstances can make use of the Exception Decision Process. Rules exception requests must be referred to the Exceptions Assessor.

Rules exception requests must comply with and meet the conditions specified, and satisfy the supporting documentation requirements, as described on the CSI website.

For a Rules Exception to be considered, the applicant must complete and submit the Exception Request Form with applicable fee and supporting documentation, within the required period.

What is the role of the exceptions assessor?

The Exceptions Assessor is appointed by the CSI Managing Director. The Exceptions Assessor is a full-time employee of CSI.

Rules exception requests must be referred to the Exceptions Assessor, who will:

  • Log the request into the student’s file;
  • Review the request for exception to validate if it meets the described conditions and, where applicable, ensure that the supporting documentation requirements are met;
  • Confirm the reception of the request to the student within two (2) business days of receipt of form and payment;
  • Advise the student to expect a response to their request within fifteen (15) business days.

If the Exceptions Assessor determines that the request does not meet the described conditions and/or supporting documentation requirements, this information is communicated to the student. On the other hand, if the Exceptions Assessor determines that the rules exception request complies with the appropriate requirements, the Exceptions Assessor will then make a decision to approve or refuse the request within ten (10) business days.

The decision is recorded into the student’s file and communicated to the student by email.

What is the role of the rules exception hearing committee?

The Rules Exception Hearing Committee members are appointed by the CSI Managing Director. The Committee’s role is to review student appeals of Exceptions Assessor decisions.

How does the appeal process work?

A student can appeal the Exceptions Assessor’s decision to the Rules Exception Hearing Committee.

The student must initiate the appeal process by:

  • Sending the Exceptions Assessor a notice of appeal within ten (10) business days of the Exceptions Assessor’s communication of the decision refusing the request
  • Sending the appeal request by e-mail or by mail, addressed to the Exceptions Assessor
  • Explaining, in writing, why he or she feels the Exceptions Assessor’s decision is incorrect and/or what errors have been made in refusing the request

When the Exceptions Assessor receives a notice of appeal, the Exceptions Assessor will:

  • Record the appeal into the student’s file and communicate to the student that the appeal has been received.
  • Prepare all relevant documentation for the Committee
  • Submit the documentation to the Committee members

The Rules Exception Hearing Committee will decide the appeal in private. The student cannot attend the committee meetings nor communicate directly with the Committee members. The Committee’s decision will be made within five (5) business days of receipt of the appeal. The Committee can maintain, modify or overturn the original decision. The decision will be communicated to the student by the Exceptions Assessor and will be recorded in the student’s file.

Decisions of the Rules Exception Hearing Committee are final. No further appeals may be made.

(a) The Publisher grants to MAGE a nonexclusive, non-transferable license, English and French languages, electronic and print, Canadian rights, to post a PDF of the then current Edition on the MAGE internet web page. The conditions for this use are:

  • MAGE will publish the terms of the use of the PDF and require the agreement of the terms by all students/users before granting access to the student;
  • The duration is limited to the time specified in the paragraph “Term of Agreement”;
  • Access is provided on a password-protected web page and the password protection is maintained for the duration of the license;
  • No other use is to be made of the PDF, except that each user may make one paper copy for his/her own personal use;
  • No other copying, redistribution, retransmission, publication or commercial exploitation of the PDF is permitted without the express written permission of the Publisher;
  • Full acknowledgment is given, on the screen and on any printout, to the authors, the source, and the Publisher; and
  • The form of acknowledgment for the Publisher is: “Reprinted by permission of CSI, a division of Moody’s Analytics.”

Transcripts

How can I obtain a transcript?

You can access your transcript online free of charge. Login to your MyCSI page and select the “Download Transcript” link from the left menu. You will also have an option to send a transcript (by email) to your employer, potential employer, regulator or third party. The email will be sent by CSI. A formal transcript printed on CSI letterhead can also e requested. There is an administrative fee for this service.

Will the transcript contain all my past academic history?

The transcripts requested will include your entire CSI academic history.

NOTE: Course Exemptions granted do not appear on web copy and if required, an academic transcript that includes them may be requested, without a fee. Please contact us with your request through support.csi.ca.

Document replacement

If you lose or damage your diploma, certificate, transcript or Student Records, you can replace them (A fee will apply).

Academic exemptions

Course exemptions avoid unnecessary duplication of prior educational experience and are granted for courses already completed at Universities, Colleges or other select organizations. Each program has a limit to the number of course exemptions that will be granted. Students can apply for an exemption in writing by completing an Exemption Request Form. Exemptions are subject to a non-refundable Administrative Fee. An Exemption fee will be applied for each course exemption granted. Exemptions are reflected in students’ files in the Academic History section under Course Exemptions Granted.

External designation recognition

CSI recognizes that candidates’ external designations such as the CFP®, CLU, CFA etc. signify proficiency and expertise in a given area. Where applicable & stated, CSI will recognize candidates’ external designations towards CSI Certificates & Designations. External Designation Recognitions are subject to the candidate providing proof that he/she is a designee and currently in good standing. An External Designation Recognition fee will apply.

Program Voucher policies

What is a program voucher?

A program voucher consists of a series of courses that you redeem during the voucher’s life span which is 2 years. As you redeem your course the enrolment period starts for that course only. A program voucher is only valid for 2 years therefore if you do not redeem all courses by this time they will be redeemed automatically

Who can I purchase program vouchers?

Anyone can purchase CSI’s Program Vouchers. However, certain pre-requisites or requirements may exist prior to enrolling in a course (or challenging an exam) that comprises your selected Program Voucher.

How long are program vouchers options valid for?

Upon your purchase of the Program Voucher, you will have 2 years to enrol in the individual courses that comprise the Program. To enrol in the courses you will redeem a voucher, which CSI provides upon purchase.

Courses that are not redeemed within the validity period of the voucher will automatically be activated on the day of program expiry. Enrollees will then have one year (per course) within which to complete the activated course.

What is the enrolment period for each course within a program upon purchase of a voucher?

Upon purchase of the Program Voucher, CSI provides one voucher for each course in your Program. To enrol in a course you will redeem a voucher. You will have the full course enrolment period from the date of your voucher redemption to complete the course requirements. To check the enrolment period of the specific courses that comprise your Program please log in to My CSI.

What are the accepted payment methods for program vouchers?

You may purchase a Program Voucher by Visa, Master Card or by American Express. A purchase made with a credit card provides you with immediate receipts and access to enrol in the courses that comprise your program.

What are the program voucher refund policies?

Regular CSI policies apply for the program voucher option. If you request a refund within the first 14 days, CSI will retain $175 (and associated taxes) and then refund the remainder of the purchase amount.Courses in the program, that are not redeemed within the validity period of the voucher will not be eligible for a refund beyond the initial 14 day period.

Note: no refunds will apply to fully online voucher programs.

What are my options if I no longer need to take one (or more) courses in the program?

Because CSI does not offer refunds after the initial 14 day period, it is important that you consider which program option best meets your educational requirements and your career goals prior to enrolling. If you no longer require a course within the program, CSI is unable to offer a refund.

Can I redeem a voucher multiple times towards the same course?

CSI provides one voucher for each course in your Program. You can only redeem a voucher towards the same course one time. Once enrolled in a course, standard CSI policies apply for enrolment periods, extensions, exams, wait periods etc.

Can I redeem a voucher towards a course once my program voucher validity period expires?

You must redeem all courses before the expiry date. Once enrolled in the course, standard CSI policies apply for enrolment periods, extensions, exams, wait periods etc.

If CSI stops offering a course that comprises my program voucher purchase will I be reimbursed?

In the unlikely event that a course that comprises your program voucher is decommissioned, CSI will offer students the opportunity to either complete the course within a given time frame or, if a substitute course is available, a transfer to the new course. Transfer fees will not apply.

Courses Refunds

CSI courses

To be eligible for a refund, you must submit your request online or by completing a Course Cancellation Form to CSI within 14 days of your enrolment. You will receive a refund for the cost of your course enrolment, less a $175 cancellation fee.

Refunds are not available for textbooks, exam-related fees, extension fees, frames, certificate replacements, CSI study/course support tools or any online course product such as Continuing Education courses and courses available online that have no proctored exam.

No refunds are granted after the initial 14 days following your enrolment.

Employer paid courses

To cancel enrolment for a course that was paid for by your employer CSI requires an email request sent by your manager to corporate_support@csi.ca on your behalf to process the cancellation. If we do not receive this email from your manager we cannot process your course cancellation.

Note: Scotiabank students must cancel through your corporate Learning Management System (LMS).

CSC® review webinars

If you wish to cancel and receive a refund in full, you must submit a Course or Seminar Cancellation Form at least 30 days before the webinar start date. All the registrations for webinars coming within 30 days of webinar start date are non-refundable. Please contact webinarhelp@csi.ca for refund requests and more information.

Requirements and Criterial for Exceptions from CSI Policy

Are exceptions possible due to extenuating circumstances?

Important: For an exception request to be considered for any of the circumstances below, the applicant is required to complete & submit an Exception Request Form along with payment and appropriate supporting documentation within a current enrollment period or no later than 90 days after the course expiry date.

You may request an exception from the CSI policy as outlined below:

Medical / Family circumstances

  • Personal illness, injury or incapacitation causing a significant obstacle to study (including difficulties experienced during pregnancy), for a period of time during your course enrolment
  • Family illness, injury or incapacitation requiring care from the student, causing a significant obstacle to study (including caring for a newborn with medical difficulties by either of the parents/caregivers), for a period of time during the course enrolment

In the case of medical circumstance request you must provide:

  • A medical document signed by a registered medical professional
  • The medical professional must be qualified to diagnose the illness or the injury being claimed
  • The documentation must state dates, length of illness or injury, along with expected recovery date indicating when studies may resume

Bereavement circumstances

Death of a family member, including spouse, partner, parent, grandparent, sibling or child, during your course enrolment period, will be considered an exception.

In the case of a family bereavement exception request you must provide:

  • Official proof of death from the Government Registrar or the funeral home
  • Verification proving the family relationship, if not evident from the official death certificate

The decision to grant an exception will take into consideration:

  • When your family member’s death occurred
  • Length of time you provided care to your family member before your family member’s death
  • Length of travel time you incurred related to your family member’s death
  • Additional responsibilities you incurred related to your family member’s death, including serving as executor of the estate or providing for additional children or parental care

Acts of God and other circumstances

In rare occurrences, a natural disaster or catastrophic occurrence may have interfered with your ability to study for or write, an exam during an enrolment period. These circumstances may include flooding caused by natural forces, tornados, or house fires.

You must provide evidence of the occurrence in the form of an insurance report, police report or fire certificate when requesting an exception.

Exceptions are granted based on how long the event may have reasonably interfered with your studying. If your materials have been stolen, the Exceptions Assessor would have to be certain that it was impossible for you to have purchased new materials before the enrolment expiry date. In addition, you will need to provide supporting documents to confirm this claim. These documents can be police reports, campus or transit police reports, or insurance claims. If the exception is granted it will only reflect the late stages of the enrolment and include a reasonable amount of time for you to purchase and review the material.

Important: For an exception request to be considered for any of the above circumstances, the applicant is required to complete & submit an Exception Request Form along with payment and appropriate supporting documentation within a current enrolment period or no later than 90 days after the course expiry date.

Are there any partial refund exceptions?

Partial course fee refunds are allowed if a request is received up to two weeks after enrolling in a course.

Occasionally, requests are received for partial refunds after this two-week period. Extenuating circumstances including serious illness and catastrophe, or a CSI error first discovered outside the enrolment period, will also be considered.

To apply for refunds the following documentation is required.

If you have a serious illness:

  • You must provide a document signed by a registered medical professional
  • The medical professional must be qualified to diagnose the illness or the injury being claimed
  • The documentation must state dates, length of illness or injury, along with expected recovery date, indicating when studies may resume

If you have a catastrophe, you must provide an insurance or police report.

Important: For an exception request to be considered for any of the above, the applicant is required to complete & submit an Exception Request Form along with payment and appropriate supporting documentation within a current enrollment period.
